Summer holidays are all but over, and the luxury of sitting on the deck at the bach, under a tree at the beach or at a cafe for long lazy lunches has disappeared right along with “holiday mode”.
And so, it is time to get back into the swing of grabbing a quick bite between meetings, or to kick off that New Years Resolution of being more “prepared as you leave the house in the early hours of the day” which will allow you to get to work, with a few ready made ingredients from your refrigerator, thereby enabling you to compose some semblance of edible deliciousness come your lunch break! Phew, just thinking that is a mouthful!
Here are my Top 5 Grab & Go Lunch Ideas for the coming weeks – to make things more bearable as you settle back into life at your desk.
1. Salad in a Jar
The options are pretty much endless for this fabulous idea – sweet, savoury, healthy, hearty, vege laden, grain filled. You decide! You can make the jars up to 3 or 4 days in advance meaning: spend a quick Sunday afternoon doing the prep and all you need to do is grab a jar on your way out the door for the next three or four mornings for work or Uni. Here you will find a whole bunch of drool-worthy inspirational ideas.
2. Freezer Burritos
If you’ve got a little more time up your sleeve on a weekend afternoon, or a week night perhaps, these Freezer Burritos are an excellent idea. Filled with your choice of contents, and wrapped and loaded into the freezer, you simply remove from the freezer on your way out the door and come lunchtime, have a thawed morsel ready for the office microwave.
3. Bistro Boxes
These boxes are originally a Starbucks inception, but are easy enough to recreate at your place, to suit your needs and provide a perfect balanced meal for lunch. You can include any cold meat you like, or skip the meat altogether and incorporate a selection of vege sticks, pita bread, hummus, tabbouleh, or crackers and cheeses. The world is your oyster when creating little bistro boxes like these. You can pick up your own Bento Boxes pretty cheap at stores like Japan Mart for $3.
4. McDonald’s Real Choices Chicken McWrap
McDonald’s has introduced a brand new Real Choices range to their menu which makes it a perfect inclusion in this line up of wonderful ‘on-the-run’ lunch options. If you lack time or motivation to prepare your own meals at home, you still have the option of dropping into any of the many McDonald’s locations and picking up a delicious McWrap. One of the best thing about these little beauties, apart from their freshness and deliciousness that is, is their packaging. They come in a convenient cardboard sleeve that makes eating a cinch and you can take comfort in the fact that the wraps contain fresh ingredients, resulting in a wrap just like one you’d make at home. (See what other nzgirls think about these new McWraps here.)
5. Lasagne in a Jar
Perhaps better suited to a rainy day, these lasagne in a jar are perfect for a hearty filling meal. You can make traditional lasagne with beef or snazz things up with a delicious vegetarian version. Pop your refrigerated jar in your bag, reheat in the microwave and you’re set! Mmmmmmm!
